How to encourage your child to practice their writing at home.
For younger children the biggest challenges can be knowing their sounds and having a comfortable pencil grip. This page will help parents and children to pronounce the sound that the child needs to write:

They will then need to identify the sound on an alphabet card before copying it. At the start of Reception we teach children to write the first sound of a word only, then the first and last sound, then build up to those in between.
Games/activities which involve using tweezers, scissors, pegs, chopsticks etc will strengthen the hand muscles.
Children who enjoy reading and being read to will have more ideas for creative writing. There is plenty more things to write though e.g. shopping lists, thank you messages, jokes.
No great author ever wrote a book that was perfect the first time around: give them help coming up with ideas, discuss the use of vocabulary, new grammar and techniques. Talk about and make note of any words, techniques or ideas they want to use before they get started. When they are finished, read out what your child has written together, then decide on one thing you could improve to make their writing skills even better. Then can they spot any mistakes in the spelling or punctuation? Does it make sense? If your child is pleased with their writing perhaps they could bring it in to show the staff?
