Monday 12th June 2023

Year 6 had a fantastic time at 'The Playground' near Bury St Edmunds! We tackled different obstacles on the fantastic assault course and took part in team building activities as well. We really enjoyed the experience and even our teachers got take their revenge with water guns!

Year 6 had great fun at their Reading Café. We read extracts from ‘The Strange Case of Origami Yoda’ by Tom Angelberger.  The story, which involves Dwight and his paper origami Yoda, shares the misadventures of a group of children who seek Yoda’s wise advice. Afterwards, we made our own origami paper Yodas by following some instructions.

Tuesday 9th May 2023

Year 6 were delighted to receive their special celebratory coronation mugs from the Edmund de Moundeford Trust. The special keepsakes, which will always be a reminder of the coronation, will be treasured always. The class are incredibly grateful for the trust for this special memento.

Tuesday 18th April 2023

Today Year 6 revisited prime and square numbers. We took part in a whole-class investigation to explore whether we could had prime numbers to make a square number.

Wednesday 15th March 2023

For British Science Week Year 6 explored the world of microorganisms as part of their termly focus on living things and their habitats. We conducted an experiment to test which conditions yeast, a type of fungus, prefers to thrive in. We ensured our experiment was fair by using the same amounts of sugar, water and yeast in each bottle that we filled. The only thing we changed was the temperature. We enjoyed observing the effects of our experiment on the yeast!

Today Year 6 put their knowledge of angles to the test - by creating their own board games!

Today Year 6 celebrated World Book Day. We started the morning by discussing the books we had brought in from home. Next, we took part in the BBC Live Lesson and changed the ending to our favourite stories. After that, we designed our own bookmarks and created book reviews. IN the afternoon, we watched David Walliam's 'Grandpa's Great Escape' while designing our own National Book Tokens.

Monday 27th February 2023

Today Eagles had their second Reading Café of the year. We shared the poem ' The Listeners' by Walter de la Mare before trying different activities including designing the house, defining words and completing comprehension questions.

Tuesday 7th February 2023

Today Year 6 took part in a special DT Workshop called 'The Road to RIAT', provided by the RAF and The Smallpeice Trust. We started the day by learning how gliders work before designing our own. After break, we gave eachother feedback on our designs before building and testing our creations! In the afternoon, we designed our own sustainable aircraft of the future. The best design will be judged by Mr Jones and entered into a competition for one lucky Year 6 pupil to win the chance to attend the Royal International Air Tattoo.

Today Year 6 celebrated the NSPCC's Number Day. We tackled the TTRockstars Number Day Challenge, competed in a class quiz and challenged ourselves to solve a range of different puzzles. What fun we had!

Wednesday 18th January 2023

Today we investigated electrical circuits. We experimented with cells (batteries), bulbs and motors to see what would happen to the flow of electricity. We made some interesting discoveries.

Wednesday 14th December 2022

In Maths we have been learning about different units of measurement. Today we practised weighing ingredients in grams and kilograms, converting when needed, to make our own special Christmas cereal.

This week everyone in school has been taking part in the Hour of Code. Today it was the turn of Year 6. We completed a text-based coding activity, following directions and using if/else statements and loops, as well as exploring other variables, conditionals and commands.

Some of Santa’s elves visited Reception today to read stories, play games and answer questions about the North Pole. We can’t possibly guess who they could be!

Today we had our Reading Café! We shared our favourite pieces of writing before sharing the story 'Instructions' by Neil Gaiman. We discussed some of the vocabulary and inferred some of the deeper meaning of the story. After this, we completed some creative activities linked to the story with our parents and carers.

Friday 25th November 2022

Today Year 6 continued developing their own computer games. After learning about Loops with Mark Zuckerberg, we practised using a Forever Loop on Scratch. We designed a click and hide game using variables such as score and time.

Friday 18th November 2022

This week has been Anti-Bullying Week and Year 6 have been reflecting on this year's theme of 'Reach Out'. After discussing strategies to reach out to others if we are being bullied or see bullying happening, we created our own posters to display around the school.

Monday 7th November 2022

Today Year 6 have been learning about Buddhism for Buddhism Day in school. We thought about how the different aspects of the eightfold path such as Right Action, Right Speech and Right Concentration can impact wellbeing and happiness. We also created Mala bracelets and discussed how Buddhists use these to chant and pray. Finally, we were excited to meet Yanaki, a practising Buddhist, and learn about the life of the Buddha. We also had the chance to practise meditation - some of us found this a bit tricky!

Today Year 6 started their new Science topic! We began our exploration of evolution by noticing how there is variation within a species and that offspring inherit traits from both parents. We experimented by seeing what traits would be inherited from Mr Men and Little Miss characters.

Friday 21st October 2022

Today Year 6 took part in ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ Day by discussing what makes us unique and celebrating our differences. We listened to Brighton and Hove Albion player Neal Maupay’s experiences of racism on social media before designing our own posters.

Today we took part in a healthy eating session. We thought about how we can care for our bodies and discussed making healthy eating choices. After this, we tried some movements to keep fit!

Today we began exploring and representing square and cube numbers. We used cubes to represent numbers before solving expressions and equations. Can you solve 6- 23?

In DT we have been learning about bridges and thinking of our own designs. Today we tried out some different techniques that strengthen cardboard, our chosen material. We tried different ways of joining and strengthening the card before starting our bridge designs next time!

Wednesday 12th October 2022

Today Year 6 started exploring Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky. After reading the poem we analysed the words and discussed what they could mean. Before we knew it, we were galumping back together to burble our ideas in the wabe!

This week we have been learning how to do long division. After we tried a few, we had to solve a long division puzzle by matching up equations to answers.

As part of our topic on Japan we have been practising Japanese Fan Dancing. We learnt how to use the fan in many ways when dancing: as a paintbrush, a sun rise, a parasol and much more. We rehearsed a sequence of movements with a partner before performing to the rest of the class. We also listened to the music and thought about how to time our sequence of movements to match the mood and telling a short story.

On Wednesday, Eagles took part in 'Moral Day'. We began the day by watching clips from a Bug's Life and discussing the imbalance of power between grasshoppers and ants. We thought about society and discussed how we should treat each other. We also thought about the choices we make and the impact these have on others. Finally, we created our own 'Moral Games' to explore making choices.

Our focus today in Art was to respond to what we observed and could remember through drawing. We looked at a range of different shaped bottles and jars and practised sketching these.

In Geography we learnt about the lines of longitude and latitude. We used these to locate countries around the world.

Tuesday 20th September 2022 & Wednesday 21st September 2022

On Tuesday we had an exciting introduction to our Literacy topic! We have been tasting different types of apple. We compared four different varieties for their texture and taste and thought about how to use language that would enable us to compare and contrast them against each other.

 

On Wednesday we began to analyse the opening pages of our new text 'Firebird' by searching for a range of different word classes. We noticed the text had no adverbs, so we'll definitely to adding these into our own writing in a few weeks time!

In Computing, we have been learning about e-Safety and considering how we use technology. After discussing how we use different apps and websites in school and at home, we used the computers to mind map our ideas.

Our focus today in PE was to practise our basketball skills.

In literacy this morning, we have been identifying and sorting word classes. First, we read the Magic Box and discussed the different word classes we knew, such as prepositions, nouns, determiners and adjectives. We also discussed their meanings. Then we searched the text for as many examples of the different word classes as possible, sorting them as we went.
