Happy New Year! I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas. Here is some information you may find useful about the first half of the spring term 2013.
Our new topic is ‘Toys’. The children told me that they wanted to find out:
What are other people’s toys like?
How are toys made and what are they made out of?
What were toys like long ago?
How do toys move?
From these questions our topic will have a history and science focus.
We shall be looking at what our toys are like and comparing them to toys from long ago. Mrs Reeves has kindly agreed to come in to talk and show children toys she played with when she was younger. We will be visiting The Ancient House Museum in Thetford to find out more about toys in the past ~ more details about this trip will follow.
As we will be finding out about how toys are made this links with Science ~ materials. We shall be handling different materials, identifying and describing materials. Children will also sort materials and discover properties of materials, such as magnetic and not magnetic, waterproof and not waterproof.
Also, we will be investigating moving things, describing movement such as pushes and pulls.
In art and design we shall be investigating different types of materials to produce weavings both inside and outside classrooms.
During Literacy we will be continuing Read, Write Inc. In addition we shall also be looking at Traditional fairy stories and Non fiction writing about toys.
Numeracy links to our topic include, measuring toys and playing in our role play area which is now a toy shop.
In our outdoor classroom we have a small world play area which the children can retell the story of the three little pigs using puppets. There is a construction area where the children are challenged to build homes from the three pigs using different materials.
We are still growing vegetables in our raised beds. The carrots and leeks are getting larger by the day. We have harvested our turnips and hope you enjoyed them! As the weather becomes warmer we shall be sowing some more vegetable seeds and look forward to watching those grow. I have bought some herbs (rosemary and thyme) to put in our small containers which will hopefully smell nice and give some colour in the summer months.
Please note that the children will be going swimming again this term BUT the groups have changed.
